On paper, tile and stone are the friendliest floors a robot vacuum will ever meet — hard, flat, no carpet pile to fight. In practice the story lives in the details most buyers never think about: grit packed into grout lines, black slate that convinces a cliff sensor it's staring into a void, and what a wet mop pad quietly does to unsealed natural stone. Why Tile Is a Robot's Favorite Surface

Start with the good news, because there's a lot of it. A tiled floor is about the closest thing to ideal conditions a robot vacuum ever gets. A round robot brush and a flat suction mouth skim across the tops of the tiles and mostly pass over the valleys. Cliff sensors — the downward-facing infrared eyes that stop a robot tumbling down stairs — work by bouncing light off the floor and timing the return. Black slate, charcoal porcelain, and very dark stone absorb that light instead of reflecting it, so the sensor can read "no floor here," refuse to cross the area, or even refuse to leave the dock. LiDAR robots — which measure with their own spinning laser rather than reading ambient light — sail across shiny floors without noticing. Thresholds and Mixed Floors

Very few homes are wall-to-wall tile. Usually it meets wood in a hallway or carpet at a bedroom door, and those seams are their own small saga. Tile often sits slightly proud of the adjoining floor or meets a metal transition strip, and a round robot can only climb so high before it beaches on the lip.
